Cotton Blend

Fabric combining cotton with synthetic fibers like polyester or spandex for improved stretch, durability, and wrinkle resistance.

What Is a Cotton Blend?

A cotton blend is a fabric made by combining cotton fibres with one or more synthetic fibres — most commonly elastane (spandex), polyester, or nylon — during the spinning or weaving process. The goal is to keep cotton's natural comfort properties (breathability, softness, moisture absorption) while adding the performance characteristics of synthetics (stretch recovery, shape retention, wrinkle resistance, and durability).

Pure cotton has a significant limitation for lingerie: it has zero elastic recovery. Stretch it, and it stays stretched. This means pure cotton underwear sags by midday, waistbands lose their grip, and bra bands stretch out within weeks. By adding just 5% elastane, the fabric gains the ability to stretch and snap back to its original shape throughout the day. This single improvement is why cotton-blend underwear dominates the everyday lingerie market over pure cotton.

The blend ratio determines the fabric character. A 95/5 cotton-elastane blend feels almost identical to pure cotton but holds its shape. A 60/40 cotton-polyester blend is more durable and wrinkle-resistant but breathes significantly less. For bra bands, nylon blended with cotton adds the firmness needed to anchor the band without the rigidity of a purely synthetic fabric. Reading the care label ratio is the quickest way to predict how a cotton-blend garment will feel and perform.

Sinderella uses cotton-elastane blends in gussets and everyday basics where the combination of cotton's breathability and elastane's recovery delivers reliable comfort from morning to night.

How to Wear & Style

Cotton-blend underwear is the reliable daily choice — it holds its shape through long work days, survives machine washing better than pure cotton, and maintains a snug fit without cutting in. For hot Indian weather, look for blends with at least 80% cotton so breathability is not compromised. When gifting everyday basics, cotton-elastane blends are the most practical choice: comfortable, durable, and universally appreciated.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a cotton blend?

Fabric combining cotton with synthetic fibers like polyester or spandex for improved stretch, durability, and wrinkle resistance.

What is the best cotton blend ratio for lingerie?

For everyday underwear, 90-95% cotton with 5-10% elastane (spandex) is ideal. The cotton provides breathability and softness while the elastane adds stretch recovery so the garment holds its shape. For bras, 60-80% cotton with polyester or nylon provides the structural firmness needed in the band. Avoid blends below 50% cotton if breathability is your priority — at that point, the synthetic properties dominate.

Does cotton-polyester blend breathe as well as pure cotton?

No. Every percentage of polyester added reduces the overall breathability because polyester fibres do not absorb moisture — they repel it. A 70/30 cotton-polyester blend breathes noticeably less than pure cotton but dries faster and wrinkles less. For intimate wear in hot climates, prioritise blends with at least 80% cotton or choose cotton-elastane blends over cotton-polyester.
