Cotton

A natural fiber known for its breathability, softness, and moisture absorption, ideal for everyday underwear and sleepwear.

What Is Cotton?

Cotton is a natural plant fibre harvested from the seed pods (bolls) of the cotton plant. The fibres are spun into yarn and woven or knitted into fabric that is soft, breathable, absorbent, and hypoallergenic. It is the most widely used natural fibre in the world and has been the default material for everyday underwear for centuries — for good reason. No synthetic has fully replicated cotton's combination of moisture absorption, air permeability, and gentle skin feel.

Cotton dominates daily lingerie because it breathes. The fibre structure has a natural twist and hollow core that allows air to circulate through the fabric and moisture to be absorbed into the fibre (rather than sitting on the surface as it does with polyester). This keeps the skin drier and cooler — critical for intimate wear in India's climate. Cotton is also naturally hypoallergenic, making it the safest choice for sensitive skin and the material most recommended by dermatologists for daily underwear.

Cotton quality varies enormously. Long-staple varieties (like Supima and Egyptian cotton) produce smoother, stronger yarns that feel silky and resist pilling. Short-staple cotton is rougher and less durable but cheaper. For lingerie, combed cotton — where short fibres are removed before spinning — offers the best balance of softness and durability. The fabric weight matters too: 130-160 GSM is ideal for underwear (lighter fabrics are too sheer, heavier ones feel bulky).

Sinderella uses cotton and cotton-blend gussets in pieces where intimate-area comfort is paramount, ensuring breathability where it matters most, even in lace or synthetic-bodied designs.

How to Wear & Style

Cotton underwear is the everyday foundation — wear it for work, exercise, travel, and sleep. It handles machine washing well (unlike delicate lace or satin), so cotton basics are the workhorses of any lingerie collection. For Indian summers, look for lightweight cotton or cotton-modal blends that feel cool against the skin. One limitation: pure cotton has no stretch recovery, so look for cotton blended with 5% elastane for underwear that maintains its fit throughout the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do gynaecologists recommend cotton underwear?

Cotton is highly breathable and absorbs moisture without trapping it against the skin the way synthetics can. This helps maintain a dry, ventilated environment in the intimate area, reducing the conditions that promote yeast and bacterial overgrowth. Most medical professionals specifically recommend cotton or cotton-gusset underwear for daily wear to support intimate health.

What is the difference between combed cotton and regular cotton in lingerie?

Combed cotton undergoes an extra processing step where short, broken fibres and impurities are combed out, leaving only the longest, straightest fibres. This produces a smoother, softer, stronger fabric that pills less and feels noticeably silkier against the skin. Regular (carded) cotton skips this step and has a slightly rougher texture. For lingerie that sits against sensitive skin all day, combed cotton is worth the modest price difference.
