What Is Polyester?

Polyester (polyethylene terephthalate, or PET) is the world's most produced synthetic fiber, accounting for over 50% of global fiber production. It is manufactured by polymerizing purified terephthalic acid with ethylene glycol — both derived from petroleum — and extruding the molten polymer through spinnerets into filaments. The fiber was first commercialized in the 1950s and has become ubiquitous across every textile category due to its low cost, high durability, and versatile performance characteristics.

Polyester's advantages for lingerie are durability, color retention, shape stability, and wrinkle resistance. The fiber is exceptionally strong (stronger than cotton or silk per unit weight), maintains its shape through hundreds of wash cycles, and holds dye with remarkable colorfastness — prints and deep colors stay vibrant far longer than on natural fibers. Polyester does not shrink, does not stretch out of shape, and springs back from wrinkles without ironing. The major trade-off is breathability: polyester absorbs just 0.4% moisture (vs cotton's 7-8%), which can make it feel clammy in humid conditions.

In lingerie, polyester is used for printed fabrics (where its dye-holding ability creates vivid patterns), lace (most machine lace is polyester-based), satin finishes (polyester satin mimics silk at a fraction of the cost), and structural elements (boning channels, underwire casings). Modern microfiber polyester has largely solved the comfort issue — ultra-fine filaments create fabric that is smoother, softer, and more breathable than traditional polyester. Care is the easiest of any fiber: machine wash in any temperature, tumble dry on low, virtually indestructible.

(3) Apply a tiny amount of unscented hand lotion to your skin before dressing; the moisture layer prevents static from building. Dryer sheets reduce static but leave a waxy residue that reduces moisture-wicking ability.
