An ultra-fine synthetic fiber that creates an incredibly smooth, lightweight fabric with excellent moisture-wicking properties.

What Is Microfiber?

Microfiber is a textile term for any synthetic fiber with a linear density below 1.0 denier — that is, a single strand weighing less than 1 gram per 9,000 meters of length. For context, a human hair is approximately 20 denier, and a silk filament is about 1.25 denier. Most microfiber used in lingerie is made from polyester, nylon (polyamide), or blends of both, extruded through specialized spinnerets that split each filament into ultra-fine sub-filaments during production.

The extreme fineness of microfiber filaments gives the resulting fabric several properties valuable for intimate wear. The dense packing of fine threads creates an exceptionally smooth surface — smoother than natural fibers can achieve — which means microfiber lingerie sits flat under fitted clothing with virtually no visible lines. The tightly packed structure also wicks moisture through capillary action (pulling sweat away from skin to the fabric surface where it evaporates), though it does not absorb moisture into the fiber itself like cotton or modal do.

In lingerie, microfiber is the standard fabric for T-shirt bras, seamless panties, and no-show underwear. The fabric holds dye exceptionally well (producing rich, lasting colors), resists wrinkling, dries quickly after washing, and does not pill. It is commonly blended with 5-15% elastane for stretch. Care is easy: machine wash gentle cycle in cold water, tumble dry low. Avoid bleach and fabric softener (which coats the fibers and reduces moisture-wicking ability).

Is microfiber better than cotton for everyday underwear?

Each has advantages. Microfiber is smoother (invisible under fitted clothing), lighter, faster drying, and more resistant to wrinkling and pilling. Cotton is more breathable, absorbs moisture better (important for gusset linings), and is a natural fiber preferred by people with chemical sensitivities. Many quality underwear brands use both: microfiber for the outer body (smooth, no-show fit) with a cotton gusset lining (for hygiene and airflow where it matters most). This combination gives you the best of both materials.

Does microfiber lingerie trap heat and odor?

Microfiber wicks moisture away from the skin surface faster than cotton, which helps with temperature regulation. However, synthetic microfiber does not absorb moisture into the fiber itself — it transfers it to the fabric surface where it evaporates. In very humid conditions with minimal airflow, this can make microfiber feel slightly clammy compared to absorbent natural fibers. For odor, synthetic fibers can harbor bacteria more than cotton, so washing after every wear is important. Look for microfiber with antimicrobial treatment if odor is a concern.
