Underwire

A thin, U-shaped wire sewn into the underside of bra cups to provide structural support and shape to the bust.

What Is an Underwire?

An underwire is a thin, rigid or semi-rigid U-shaped wire — typically made from stainless steel, titanium alloy, or heavy-gauge plastic — that is sewn into a fabric channel along the bottom and sides of each bra cup. The wire follows the natural curve of the inframammary fold (the crease where the breast meets the chest wall), creating a structural frame that lifts the bust upward and forward while defining the shape of the cup above it.

The underwire is the single most effective support element in a bra. While the band provides anchoring and the straps provide positioning, the underwire provides lift by creating a rigid shelf under each breast. Without it, cups rely entirely on fabric tension and elasticity, which stretch out over time. This is why underwire bras maintain their shape and support level far longer than wireless alternatives, making them the preferred choice for C cups and above where the weight of breast tissue demands structural help.

A quality underwire is encased in a padded fabric channel with tipped ends that cannot poke through the material. The wire gauge should be appropriate to the cup size — thicker for larger cups, thinner for smaller — and the wire shape must match the wearer's breast root width. If the wire is too narrow, it sits on breast tissue instead of on the ribcage; too wide, and it digs into the underarm. This is why underwire fit depends on the brand's wire shape as much as the numbered size.

Sinderella bra sets use underwires calibrated to each size range, with encased tips and padded channels that keep the wire secure and comfortable against the body throughout the day.

How to Wear & Style

After putting on an underwire bra, lean forward and settle each breast fully into the cup, then stand upright and check that the wire sits flat against the ribcage all the way around — not on breast tissue at any point. The centre gore (the piece connecting the two cups) should lie flat against the sternum. If it floats, the cup is too small. When gifting, an underwire bra set signals structured elegance; pair it with matching bottoms for a complete gift that combines support with beauty.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an underwire?

A thin, U-shaped wire sewn into the underside of bra cups to provide structural support and shape to the bust.

Why do some underwire bras feel uncomfortable?

Discomfort almost always indicates a fit issue, not a flaw in the underwire concept. If the wire digs into breast tissue, the cup is too small. If it pokes at the underarm, the wire shape is too wide or narrow for your frame. If it presses painfully against the sternum, the gore is too wide. A correctly fitted underwire should sit flat against the ribcage in the inframammary fold and feel virtually unnoticeable.

Can underwire bras damage breast tissue?

No. There is no scientific evidence that underwire bras cause breast damage, block lymphatic drainage, or increase cancer risk. These are persistent myths. A well-fitted underwire distributes pressure along the natural fold under the breast and sits on the ribcage, not on breast tissue itself. If the wire is sitting on tissue, the cup size needs to increase.
