Gore

Pronunciation: GOR

The center panel of a bra between the cups, also called the bridge, which should sit flat against the sternum for proper fit.

What Is a Gore?

The gore — also called the bridge — is the small fabric panel at the exact centre front of a bra where the two cups meet. In underwire bras, this is where the ends of both underwires converge. The gore can be as narrow as 1 cm on a deep plunge style or as wide as 5 cm on a full-coverage bra. It is one of the most structurally critical parts of the bra because it anchors the cups in position and determines how much separation exists between the breasts.

The gore is the single best indicator of correct bra fit. When a bra fits properly, the gore sits flat against the sternum with consistent contact from top to bottom. If the gore lifts away from the chest (floats), the cups are too small and breast tissue is pushing the panel forward. If the gore digs painfully into the breastbone, the cups may be too large or the gore width does not match the wearer's breast spacing. Getting the gore to tack flat is the first checkpoint in any proper bra fitting.

Gore width affects the visual result. A wide gore creates more separation and a modest silhouette with each breast clearly defined in its own cup. A narrow gore brings the cups closer together, pushing breast tissue toward the centre for enhanced cleavage. Plunge bras often have a gore as narrow as a single centimetre, while full-coverage and minimiser bras use wider gores for maximum stability and separation.

Sinderella's bra sets are constructed with gores tailored to each style — narrow for plunge and push-up silhouettes, wider for full-coverage support.

How to Wear & Style

When trying on a bra, press your finger against the centre of the gore. If it sits firmly against the sternum with no gap, the cup size is correct. If the gore floats, go up one cup size. When buying a bra as a gift, knowing her preferred cleavage style helps you choose the right gore width — narrow for together-cleavage, wider for a natural, separated look. For low-cut tops, choose a plunge bra with a short, narrow gore that stays hidden below the neckline.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a gore on a bra?

The center panel of a bra between the cups, also called the bridge, which should sit flat against the sternum for proper fit.

Why does the gore on my bra float away from my chest?

A floating gore almost always means the cup size is too small. When the cups cannot fully contain the breast tissue, the excess pushes the centre panel forward and away from the sternum. Try going up one cup size while keeping the same band size — the gore should then lie flat.

Do all bra styles have a gore?

Most structured bras (underwire, moulded, balconette) have a defined gore panel. However, bralettes, plunge bras, and some strapless designs may have a very narrow or nearly absent gore to allow the cups to sit closer together for deeper cleavage. The narrower the gore, the less separation between the breasts.
