Tencel
Tencel
Pronunciation: TEN-sell
A brand name for lyocell fiber by Lenzing, known for its eco-friendly closed-loop production and silky-soft hand feel.
What Is Tencel?
Tencel is the brand name for lyocell and modal fibers produced by the Austrian company Lenzing AG. Lyocell is a type of regenerated cellulose fiber made from sustainably harvested wood pulp (typically eucalyptus, beech, or spruce) dissolved in a non-toxic organic solvent called NMMO (N-methylmorpholine N-oxide). The key innovation is the closed-loop process: over 99% of the solvent is recovered and reused, making Tencel production dramatically less polluting than conventional viscose manufacturing.
The resulting fiber has a uniquely smooth surface at the microscopic level. Where cotton fibers have a rough, twisted ribbon shape and wool fibers have overlapping scales, Tencel fibers have a round, smooth cross-section. This smoothness is responsible for the fabric's signature silky hand feel and its gentleness against sensitive skin. It also means Tencel drapes fluidly, similar to silk, but at a fraction of silk's cost and with far easier care requirements.
For lingerie, Tencel offers a compelling combination of performance properties. It absorbs 50% more moisture than cotton, wicking sweat away from the skin and releasing it through evaporation. This moisture management makes Tencel lingerie feel dry and cool in hot weather. The cellulose structure also naturally inhibits bacterial growth on the fiber surface, which means Tencel lingerie develops less odour between washes compared to synthetic alternatives. These properties make it ideal for everyday briefs, bralettes, and camisoles in tropical climates.
Tencel is stronger than viscose when wet, so it holds up well to machine washing on a gentle cycle with cold water. It does not pill as easily as cotton and maintains its shape through repeated wash cycles. Air drying is preferred (it dries quickly), but low-heat tumble drying is acceptable. Tencel wrinkles moderately but relaxes when hung, so steaming or a light iron works well. The fabric is fully biodegradable, composting within weeks in industrial facilities.
How to Wear & Style
Tencel lingerie is the ideal everyday fabric for Indian weather. Use Tencel briefs as your daily rotation — they stay fresh longer and feel cooler than cotton throughout humid monsoon days. A Tencel camisole works as sleepwear, a layering piece, or a lounge top. For a thoughtful gift, Tencel lounge sets offer the soft luxury of silk with the easy-wash practicality that makes them actually wearable every day rather than saved for special occasions.

What is Tencel?
A brand name for lyocell fiber by Lenzing, known for its eco-friendly closed-loop production and silky-soft hand feel.
What is the difference between Tencel and regular viscose?
Both start from wood pulp cellulose, but the manufacturing process differs significantly. Viscose uses carbon disulfide, a toxic solvent, and recovers only about 50% of it. Tencel (lyocell) uses NMMO, a non-toxic organic solvent, and recovers over 99% of it in a closed loop. Tencel fibers are also stronger when wet, meaning garments shrink less and maintain their shape better through washing compared to viscose.
Is Tencel good for sensitive skin?
Tencel is excellent for sensitive skin. The smooth fiber surface reduces friction and irritation. The cellulose structure absorbs moisture efficiently, keeping the skin surface drier and inhibiting bacterial growth that causes odour and irritation. Tencel is naturally hypoallergenic (no chemical finishes needed for softness) and has been certified skin-friendly by dermatological testing institutes.
