What Is Lyocell?
Lyocell is a semi-synthetic cellulose fiber made by dissolving wood pulp (typically eucalyptus, beech, or birch) in an organic amine oxide solvent called NMMO (N-methylmorpholine N-oxide). The dissolved cellulose is extruded through spinnerets into fibers, then the solvent is recovered and recycled at rates exceeding 99%, making it a closed-loop manufacturing process. The most recognized brand of lyocell is Tencel, produced by the Austrian company Lenzing AG, which developed the commercial process in the 1990s.
Lyocell's properties make it exceptionally suited for intimate wear. The fiber is naturally smooth with a silk-like sheen, softer than cotton and more absorbent than polyester. It manages moisture effectively — absorbing up to 50% more than cotton — and releases it quickly through evaporation, keeping skin dry. The fiber is also naturally resistant to bacterial growth (bacteria thrive in moisture; lyocell's wicking ability starves them), which reduces odor buildup. Unlike viscose, lyocell maintains its strength when wet, making it more durable through washing.
In lingerie, lyocell is used for panties, camisoles, and everyday bralettes where skin comfort is the top priority. Its drape falls between cotton (structured) and silk (fluid), creating garments that are relaxed but not limp. Lyocell blends well with elastane for stretch and with cotton for increased structure. Care is easier than silk: machine washable on gentle cycle in cold water, no special detergent needed, and it can be tumble dried on low. Avoid bleach and fabric softener.
