Supima Cotton
Supima Cotton
An American-grown variety of extra-long staple cotton, softer and more durable than regular cotton, used in premium basics.
What Is Supima Cotton?
Supima is a trademarked name for Superior Pima cotton, a specific variety of Gossypium barbadense (extra-long staple cotton) grown exclusively in the southwestern United States, primarily in California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. The Supima trademark is administered by a non-profit organisation that licenses the name only to mills and brands that use 100% verified American Pima cotton, ensuring authenticity. Supima represents less than 1% of all cotton grown worldwide.
The key differentiator is fiber length. Regular upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) has fibers averaging 25-28mm. Supima fibers are 35mm or longer. Longer fibers mean fewer fiber ends per centimetre of yarn, which produces a smoother, more lustrous thread that pills less, absorbs dye more evenly, and maintains softness through repeated washing. Supima cotton is also approximately 45% stronger than regular cotton, so garments made from it resist tearing and thinning much longer.
In lingerie, Supima cotton is used for premium basics: everyday bralettes, briefs, hipsters, and camisoles where skin contact is constant and wash frequency is high. The fabric's superior colour retention means black Supima briefs stay black rather than fading to charcoal after 30 washes. The softness actually improves with washing as residual processing chemicals are gradually removed, unlike regular cotton which becomes stiffer and rougher over time.
Care for Supima cotton is straightforward. Machine wash in warm or cold water with standard detergent. Tumble dry on medium heat or air dry. Supima handles machine washing far better than delicate fibers like silk or modal. Avoid bleach, which can degrade even premium cotton over time. The fabric breathes exceptionally well and absorbs moisture efficiently, making Supima cotton lingerie ideal for hot climates where synthetic fabrics feel uncomfortable against the skin all day.
How to Wear & Style
Supima cotton is the premium everyday choice. Stock your drawer with Supima briefs and bralettes as your daily rotation pieces. The fabric breathes naturally, making it ideal under work clothes in Indian heat. For a practical gift, a set of Supima cotton basics in neutral tones signals quality without the delicacy of silk. Supima cotton camisoles double as comfortable sleep tops and subtle layering pieces under sheer blouses.

What is Supima cotton?
An American-grown variety of extra-long staple cotton, softer and more durable than regular cotton, used in premium basics.
What is the difference between Supima cotton and regular cotton?
Regular cotton fibers are about 25mm long. Supima cotton fibers are 35mm or longer, which means fewer fiber ends per thread, resulting in a smoother surface, less pilling, softer hand feel, and better colour retention after washing. Supima is also 45% stronger than regular cotton. Only about 1% of global cotton production is Supima, grown exclusively in the American Southwest.
Is Supima cotton worth the higher price for everyday lingerie?
For items worn daily and washed frequently, yes. Supima cotton briefs and bralettes maintain their softness and colour significantly longer than regular cotton versions. After 50 washes, regular cotton often feels rough and faded, while Supima remains soft and colour-true. The cost per wear over the life of the garment is often lower despite the higher purchase price.
