Scalloped Edge

What Is a Scalloped Edge?

A scalloped edge is a decorative border pattern consisting of a series of semicircular curves — like the profile of scallop shells lined up side by side. In lingerie, scalloped edges most commonly appear along the top of bra cups, the hem of babydolls and chemises, leg openings of panties, and the border of lace panels. On lace fabric, the scallop is typically formed as part of the lace's own structure rather than being cut separately.

Scalloped edges soften the visual boundary of a garment. Instead of a hard, straight line where fabric ends and skin begins, the curved scallops create a gradual, ornamental transition. This makes the garment look more finished and intentional. At the top of a bra cup, scalloping frames the décolletage with a decorative wave. At the hem of a chemise, it adds a feminine finish that catches light differently at each curve.

The quality marker for scalloped edges is consistency. Each curve should be the same size and depth, with clean, finished threads at the point where each scallop meets the next. On lace, the scallop should be part of the fabric's selvedge (the self-finished edge produced during weaving or knitting) — not a raw-cut edge that was shaped after production. Machine-cut scallops on non-lace fabrics need heat-sealing or overlocking to prevent unravelling.

Sinderella uses scalloped edges on lace bra sets and babydolls where the curved border adds that unmistakable finishing detail — the difference between lingerie that looks manufactured and lingerie that looks crafted.

How to Wear & Style

Scalloped-edge bralettes and bras look striking peeking above a V-neck or scoop-neck top — the wavy edge reads as an intentional style detail rather than visible underwear. For gifting, scalloped edges signal premium construction and are one of the first details people notice when they take a piece out of the box. Machine wash in a mesh bag to protect the delicate edge from snagging.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a scalloped edge?

A decorative border with a series of curved, semicircular shapes resembling scallop shells, common in lace lingerie.

Does a scalloped edge on a bra show through under clothing?

Scalloped edges create a wavy line rather than a straight one, which can be visible under thin, clingy fabrics as an uneven outline at the cup or band edge. Under medium-weight tops and dresses, scalloping is invisible. Some women intentionally wear scalloped-edge bralettes under V-necks or open blouses, letting the decorative edge peek out as a style detail.

Do scalloped edges fray or deteriorate over time?

Quality scalloped edges on lace are part of the fabric's woven or knitted structure — they are self-finished and do not fray. Machine-cut scallops on non-lace fabrics may need heat-sealing or binding to prevent unravelling. When shopping, gently rub the scallop edge between your fingers; if threads come loose, the edge is not properly finished.
