What Is Rayon?

Rayon is a family of semi-synthetic fabrics produced by dissolving wood pulp (cellulose) in chemical solvents and then extruding the solution through spinnerets to create fibers. First commercially produced in the early 1900s as "artificial silk," rayon was the first manufactured fiber to achieve the drape, softness, and lustre of natural silk at a price point accessible to everyday consumers. Today it remains one of the most widely used fabrics in intimate apparel worldwide.

The rayon family includes several distinct variants. Viscose rayon is the most common, known for its fluid drape and silk-like sheen. Modal is a second-generation rayon with higher wet strength and better wash stability. Lyocell (branded as Tencel) is the newest generation, produced in a closed-loop process that recycles solvents. Each variant shares the same cellulose origin but differs in how the fiber is processed, which affects durability, shrinkage resistance, and environmental impact.

In lingerie, rayon's greatest strength is its drape. The fibers are naturally smooth and have a slight lustre that gives garments an elegant, expensive appearance. Rayon absorbs moisture readily (up to 13% of its weight), which makes it comfortable against skin in warm climates. It breathes better than polyester and feels cooler than cotton, making it particularly well-suited for nightwear, slips, and lightweight robes popular across India.

The main weakness of standard viscose rayon is its fragility when wet. The fibers lose up to 50% of their tensile strength in water, which is why rayon garments can shrink, stretch, or distort if machine-washed carelessly. Hand wash in cold water using a mild detergent, press out excess water gently without wringing, and dry flat on a towel. Blending rayon with spandex or polyester improves wet strength while retaining the fabric's signature drape and softness.
