Micro Modal

An even finer version of modal fabric, offering cloud-like softness and exceptional moisture management.

What Is Micro Modal?

Micro Modal is a premium cellulose fiber developed by Lenzing AG (the same Austrian company behind Tencel/lyocell). It is made from sustainably harvested European beech wood pulp using a modified viscose process. The term "micro" refers to the fiber's fineness: each Micro Modal filament measures just 1.0 dtex (decitex — grams per 10,000 meters of fiber), compared to 1.3 dtex for standard modal and approximately 1.5-2.0 dtex for cotton. This ultra-fine gauge is what gives the fabric its signature velvet-like hand feel.

The practical result of finer fibers is a fabric that packs more filaments per square centimeter. This denser structure creates an exceptionally smooth surface with superior moisture management — Micro Modal absorbs 50% more moisture than cotton and releases it through evaporation faster, keeping skin dry in humid conditions. The fabric is also naturally resistant to surface pilling (the tiny balls that form on worn cotton), because the finer, stronger fibers resist the friction that causes pilling. It holds color exceptionally well through repeated washing, maintaining deep, vivid hues.

In lingerie, Micro Modal is the gold standard for everyday underwear, camisoles, and bralettes where skin comfort is paramount. The fabric's fluid drape and barely-there weight make it ideal for pieces you wear all day under clothing. It blends well with elastane (typically 5-8%) for gentle stretch. Care is simple: machine wash gentle cycle in cold water, tumble dry low or lay flat, skip the bleach and fabric softener.

Sinderella prioritizes fabrics that feel as luxurious against the skin on hour ten as they do on hour one — and that is precisely what Micro Modal delivers.

How to Wear & Style

Micro Modal is perfect for Indian climates year-round — its superior moisture wicking keeps you dry during monsoons and its lightweight drape stays comfortable in dry heat. For everyday underwear, Micro Modal in skin-matching tones virtually disappears under fitted clothing with no visible panty lines. The fabric's matte finish means it does not catch light through thin outerwear the way satin or silk can. For sleeping, a Micro Modal camisole and shorts set is lighter and cooler than cotton equivalents. The fabric softens further with each wash (up to about 10 washes), so new Micro Modal pieces will only get more comfortable over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Micro Modal differ from regular modal?

Both are made from beech wood cellulose, but Micro Modal fibers are approximately 40% thinner — each individual fiber is just 1.0 dtex compared to standard modal's 1.3 dtex. This finer gauge means more fibers per square centimeter of fabric, which produces a denser, smoother surface that feels noticeably silkier against skin. Micro Modal also has a slightly higher tensile strength per fiber, making the fabric more resistant to pilling despite its finer construction. In practice, the difference is immediately noticeable: Micro Modal has a luxurious, almost liquid drape that standard modal does not quite match.

Does Micro Modal shrink in the wash?

Micro Modal is more dimensionally stable than cotton and resists shrinkage well when washed in cold or lukewarm water. However, tumble drying on high heat can cause 3-5% shrinkage, particularly in the length. For best results, machine wash on a gentle cycle with cold water, and either tumble dry on low or lay flat to air dry. Unlike cotton, Micro Modal does not need to be oversized to compensate for expected shrinkage — buy your true size.
