Wing
Wing
The back portion of the bra band that wraps around the ribcage, extending from the side panel to the closure.
What Is a Bra Wing?
The wing is the section of a bra band that extends from the side seam (where the cup meets the band) around the back of the ribcage to the hook-and-eye closure. Despite being the least visible part of a bra, the wing is arguably the most important structural component. Approximately 80% of a bra's support comes from the band, and the wing is the largest continuous section of that band. It anchors the entire bra structure to the body and prevents the cups from pulling forward and down under the weight of the bust.
Wing construction varies significantly between bra types. A basic bralette wing is a single layer of elastic or stretch fabric, providing minimal structure. A standard bra wing uses two layers of fabric with elastic along the top and bottom edges. A full-bust or minimiser wing adds a third layer of power mesh or rigid fabric for additional firmness, and may include vertical boning channels near the side seam to prevent the wing from collapsing or rolling. The more support required, the more engineered the wing construction.
Wing height (the vertical measurement from top edge to bottom edge) determines how much back coverage the bra provides. Standard wings are 5-7cm tall. Wide wings (sometimes called smoothing wings or back-smoothing designs) extend to 10-15cm, covering more of the back and preventing the skin from bulging over the band edge. This is the "bra bulge" effect visible under fitted tops. A taller wing creates a smoother back silhouette because it distributes the band's compression over a larger area rather than concentrating it in a narrow strip.
A well-fitting wing should sit level and parallel to the floor around the entire ribcage, without riding up at the back. You should be able to slide two fingers underneath the band but not a whole hand. If the wing rides up, the band is too loose (go down a band size). If the wing digs in painfully or creates deep red marks, the band is too tight (go up a band size). The wing should lie flat against the skin without gaps, wrinkles, or areas where it pulls away from the body.
How to Wear & Style
When buying a bra, always assess the wing before the cups. A beautiful cup on a poorly fitting wing will look and feel wrong. For fitted tops and dresses, choose a bra with a taller wing in a smooth, non-textured fabric to create the cleanest back line. For backless or low-back outfits, look for bras with a narrow or U-shaped wing that sits lower on the back. When gifting, err toward wider wings for comfort, as the recipient can always adjust straps but cannot change a wing that digs in.

What is a bra wing?

Why does the bra wing ride up at the back?
A bra wing that rides up means the band is too loose. The band should sit level and parallel to the floor all the way around the ribcage. When the band is too large, the cups pull it forward and upward as they bear the weight of the bust, causing the back wing to lift. Try going down one band size (and up one cup size to compensate). The wing should sit firmly enough that you can only slide two fingers underneath it.
What is a wide wing bra and who should wear one?
A wide wing bra has taller wing panels (10-15cm compared to the standard 5-7cm) that extend higher up the back and sides. The extra height provides more surface area contact with the ribcage, which distributes band tension more evenly. Wide wings are particularly beneficial for fuller busts (D cup and above), where a narrow wing can create a bulge at the band edge. The wider panel smooths the back silhouette and prevents the 'bra bulge' line that shows through fitted tops.
