Wide Straps
Wide Straps
Bra straps that are broader than standard, distributing weight over a larger area for enhanced comfort and support.
What Are Wide Straps?
Wide straps are bra straps that measure 18mm or more across, compared to the standard 10-12mm width found on most bras. The principle is simple physics: the same weight distributed over a larger surface area creates less pressure per unit area. A D-cup bra supporting roughly 500-800 grams per side concentrates that weight into a narrow ribbon that digs into the shoulder muscle when straps are only 12mm wide. Doubling the width to 25mm halves the pressure, dramatically reducing the shoulder grooves and red marks many women experience.
Wide straps are constructed differently from standard straps. Most use a padded or cushioned core sandwiched between two layers of fabric, adding comfort without bulk. Some use a graduated design that tapers from wide at the shoulder (where weight concentrates) to narrower at the back (where they connect to the band). Premium wide straps incorporate elastic along the edges but keep the centre non-stretch, which prevents the strap from narrowing under tension and defeating the purpose of the wider design.
Wide straps are most commonly found on full-bust bras (D cup and above), minimiser bras, sports bras, and comfort-focused everyday bras. However, they have also become a design element in bralettes and fashion lingerie, where a bold wide strap in lace or satin becomes a visible style feature rather than just a functional component. The athleisure trend normalised visible wide straps, making them acceptable to show under tank tops and off-shoulder blouses.
When fitting a wide-strap bra, ensure the strap sits flat against the shoulder without curling at the edges. If the edges roll inward, the strap is too loose and is not distributing weight properly. The strap should be snug enough to support without digging in. You should be able to slide one finger comfortably underneath. Adjust the length so the strap connects to the cup at the correct height on the bust, keeping the cup seated properly on the chest wall.
How to Wear & Style
Wide straps pair naturally with broader-shouldered tops: boat necks, crew necks, and standard sleeves keep them hidden. For intentional visibility, a lace wide-strap bralette under a loose tank top or open-shoulder blouse creates a layered look that has been mainstream since the late 2010s. In skin-matching colours, even wide straps virtually disappear under most fabrics. For office wear, choose a wide-strap bra in a smooth, non-textured fabric to avoid visible strap outlines under structured blazers.

What are wide straps?
Bra straps that are broader than standard, distributing weight over a larger area for enhanced comfort and support.
How wide should bra straps be for larger cup sizes?
For D-DD cups, straps at least 18-20mm wide provide noticeably better comfort than standard 12mm straps. For E cups and above, look for straps 25mm or wider. Some full-bust bras use graduated straps that widen from 15mm at the back to 25mm+ at the shoulder where the weight concentrates. The wider the strap, the less pressure per square centimetre on the shoulder, reducing the red marks and indentations that narrow straps cause.
Do wide straps show under clothing more than thin straps?
Wide straps are more visible under thin or fitted tops with narrow shoulder areas, but they are easier to hide under sleeves and standard necklines. Many wide-strap bras use a leotard-back design that positions the straps closer to the neck, keeping them hidden under boat-neck and scoop-neck tops. Choose straps that match your skin tone for the most invisible look under lighter fabrics.
