Wet Look Fabric

A glossy, high-shine fabric that mimics the appearance of wet material, typically made from coated polyester or nylon.

What Is Wet Look Fabric?

Wet look fabric is a stretch knit textile (typically polyester-spandex or nylon-spandex) coated with a thin layer of polyurethane, resin, or metallic finish that gives the surface a glossy, slick appearance resembling wet skin or liquid. Unlike PVC, which is a rigid plastic sheet laminated onto a fabric base, wet look coating is thin and flexible enough to preserve the stretch, drape, and comfort of the underlying knit. The result is a fabric that looks dramatic but feels almost as comfortable as regular stretch jersey.

The level of shine varies by coating thickness and type. A light polyurethane coating produces a subtle sheen similar to leather, while a heavy metallic or foil coating creates an almost mirror-like reflectivity. Most lingerie-grade wet look fabric falls in the middle range: noticeably glossy but not blindingly reflective. The coating is applied to only one side of the fabric, so the inside (skin-contact side) remains the soft, matte texture of the base knit.

Wet look fabric is significantly more comfortable and practical than PVC for lingerie. Because the base is a stretch knit, the fabric moves with the body, hugs curves naturally, and allows some air circulation through the uncoated back surface. It can be pulled on and off like any stretch garment (no talcum powder needed like PVC). The coating adds a slight weight and structure that helps the garment maintain clean lines and a sculpted silhouette.

The coating is the vulnerable element. Hand wash wet look lingerie in cold water with a mild detergent, and never use fabric softener (it can break down the coating). Air dry flat with the coated side facing up. Never machine dry, iron the coated side, or dry clean. Folding can create permanent creases in the coating, so store rolled in tissue paper or hanging. With proper care, the shine lasts 2-3 years of regular wear before gradually dulling.

How to Wear & Style

Wet look lingerie makes an impact with minimal effort. A wet look bralette and high-waist brief set in black is a versatile statement piece for date nights. Combine wet look pieces with matte textures like lace or mesh for visual contrast. A wet look bodysuit worn under an open blazer with jeans transitions the piece from bedroom to bar. For gifting, wet look lingerie signals boldness and confidence without requiring the care complexity of PVC or latex.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is wet look fabric?

A glossy, high-shine fabric that mimics the appearance of wet material, typically made from coated polyester or nylon.

What is the difference between wet look fabric and PVC?

Wet look fabric uses a thin polyurethane or metallic coating on a stretch base fabric (usually polyester-spandex), making it flexible, stretchy, and relatively breathable. PVC uses a thick polyvinyl chloride coating that is rigid, non-breathable, and much shinier. Wet look is softer and more comfortable for lingerie worn over longer periods, while PVC makes a bolder visual statement for shorter wear sessions.

Does the shine on wet look fabric wear off over time?

The coating can gradually dull or flake with abrasion, harsh detergents, and machine drying. To preserve the shine, hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent, air dry flat away from direct heat, and never iron the coated surface. Store wet look pieces flat or rolled rather than folded, as repeated creasing in the same spot can crack the coating permanently.
