The reinforced top edge of a stocking, often made from a different, thicker fabric or decorated with lace.
What Is a Welt?
A welt is the reinforced upper portion of a stocking, thigh-high, or knee-high that forms the topmost band of the hosiery. It is typically 5-12cm wide and is knitted from a denser, heavier yarn than the sheer leg section below it. The welt serves two critical functions: it provides the structural strength needed to hold the stocking in place (either via suspender clips or integrated silicone grip), and it creates a finished decorative edge that frames the top of the thigh.
Welts come in several styles. A plain welt uses the same colour as the stocking leg but in a thicker knit, creating a subtle, understated band visible only when the stocking is deliberately shown. A contrast welt uses a different colour (often black on a nude stocking or red on black) to create a bold visual border. A lace-top welt replaces the plain knit band with a decorative lace pattern, turning the functional top edge into an ornamental feature designed to be seen when the stocking peeks from under a skirt hem.
For garter-style stockings (worn with a suspender belt), the welt is where the suspender clips attach. A well-constructed welt is essential here because the clips grip the fabric and pull downward under tension. A thin or loosely-knit welt will stretch, tear, or allow clips to slip. Quality garter stockings have a doubled or reinforced welt specifically engineered to withstand clip tension across an entire day or evening of wear.
For self-hold thigh-highs (stay-ups), the welt houses the silicone grip band. The grip is applied to the inside surface of the welt, and the welt's width determines how much skin contact area the silicone covers. Wider welts provide more grip and are less likely to roll or slip. When choosing thigh-highs, pay attention to the welt width and silicone coverage: a wide lace-top welt with three rows of silicone dots will stay in place far more reliably than a narrow plain welt with a single silicone stripe.
How to Wear & Style
Lace-top welts are designed to be glimpsed. Position them so the top edge sits just below the hem of a short skirt for an alluring peek when seated or climbing stairs. For a fully visible display with a garter belt, match the welt colour to the garter belt for a coordinated set. Plain welts work better under longer skirts or trousers where invisibility is the priority. When attaching suspender clips, always clip to the centre of the welt band, not the edge, for the most secure hold.

What is a welt?
The reinforced top edge of a stocking, often made from a different, thicker fabric or decorated with lace.
What is the difference between a welt and a band on thigh-high stockings?
The welt is the reinforced top portion of the stocking itself, usually 5-10cm wide, knitted from a denser yarn than the leg. The band is a separate elastic or silicone-backed strip attached to the welt to hold the stocking up. In traditional garter stockings (no silicone), the welt is where the suspender clip attaches. In self-hold thigh-highs, the welt contains the silicone grip band.
Does a wider welt stay up better on thigh-highs?
Generally yes. A wider welt distributes the grip force over a larger area of skin, which provides more friction and a more secure hold. Narrow welts (under 5cm) can roll and slip, especially on thighs with less natural grip. For the most reliable hold, look for thigh-highs with welts at least 8cm wide that contain two or three rows of silicone dots or a continuous silicone band.
