Spiral Boning
Spiral Boning
A flexible, coiled steel bone that bends with the body while providing support, more comfortable than flat steel boning.
What Is Spiral Boning?
Spiral boning is a structural element made from a continuous coil of flat steel wire wound in a tight helix pattern. Unlike a rigid flat steel bone that only bends in one plane, a spiral bone flexes smoothly in all directions — forward, backward, and side to side — and springs back to its original shape. This multi-directional flexibility makes it the preferred boning for areas of a corset or structured garment where the body needs to bend, twist, and sit comfortably.
In corsetry and structured lingerie, spiral boning occupies the side channels — the areas between the centre front busk and the centre back lacing — where the body curves and moves most. It provides enough rigidity to hold the garment's shape and smooth the torso line, but yields when you sit, lean, or breathe deeply. This combination of shaping and comfort is why spiral boning is found in everything from overbust corsets to boned bodysuits and bustiers.
Quality spiral boning is capped at both ends with metal tips that are then covered by the boning channel fabric, preventing the wire from poking through. The coil should be tight and uniform — loosely wound spirals lose their spring tension faster and can kink permanently. The bone width (typically 5-7 mm) should match the channel width precisely; a bone swimming inside a wide channel provides no meaningful support.
Sinderella corsets and structured bodysuits use spiral steel boning in the side channels, paired with flat steel at the front and back for maximum shaping where rigidity matters most. This hybrid approach delivers a sculpted silhouette that moves with the wearer rather than against her.
How to Wear & Style
If you are new to corsets, start with a spiral-boned piece — it forgives first-timer mistakes like over-tightening because the bones flex with you instead of digging in. For gifting, a spiral-boned bustier or corset top is a safer choice than full flat-steel corsetry since it requires less seasoning (gradual break-in) and feels comfortable from the first wear. Store boned garments flat or hanging — never fold them, as the bones can kink at the crease.

What is spiral boning?
A flexible, coiled steel bone that bends with the body while providing support, more comfortable than flat steel boning.
What is the difference between spiral boning and flat steel boning?
Spiral boning is made from a continuous coil of steel wire that flexes in all directions, making it comfortable for sitting and bending. Flat steel boning is a rigid strip that only flexes front-to-back and provides maximum waist reduction. Corsets typically use flat steel at the centre front and back for structure, with spiral boning along the sides for comfort during movement.
Can spiral boning rust inside a corset?
Quality spiral boning is made from galvanised or stainless steel and resists rust under normal conditions. However, prolonged exposure to moisture — such as storing a damp corset without drying it first — can cause corrosion over time. Always air-dry corsets flat after wearing and avoid submerging boned garments in water.
