What Is a Silk Blend?
A silk blend is any fabric where silk fiber is combined with one or more other fibers during the spinning or weaving process. The companion fiber is chosen to compensate for silk's known weaknesses while preserving its desirable qualities. Common blending partners include cotton (adds absorbency and reduces cost), polyester (adds strength and wrinkle resistance), elastane/spandex (adds stretch and recovery), and modal (adds softness and wash stability).
The ratio matters significantly. A fabric labelled "silk blend" could be 70% silk and 30% elastane (a luxury stretch fabric) or 15% silk and 85% polyester (essentially polyester with a silk marketing angle). In lingerie, the most useful blends for the wearer are silk-elastane (typically 90/10 or 95/5, giving silk stretch it naturally lacks), silk-cotton (50/50 or 60/40, combining silk's lustre with cotton's absorbency), and silk-modal (adding wash durability to silk's delicate nature).
For lingerie specifically, the silk-elastane blend solved a fundamental problem. Pure silk has almost no stretch, which makes it difficult to use in form-fitting garments like bras, bodysuits, and bikini briefs. Adding 5-10% elastane gives the fabric enough stretch to conform to the body while retaining silk's signature drape, lustre, and temperature regulation. This blend is the standard for premium silk lingerie from most luxury brands.
Care for silk blends depends on the companion fiber. Silk-polyester blends are the most forgiving and can usually tolerate a gentle machine cycle in a mesh bag. Silk-cotton blends should be hand washed, as cotton absorbs water and becomes heavy, which can stress the silk fibers. Silk-elastane blends should be hand washed in cool water and never exposed to high heat, which degrades both the silk and the spandex. When in doubt, treat the blend as gently as its most delicate component.
