Silicone Grip

What Is Silicone Grip?

Silicone grip is a strip or band of medical-grade silicone applied to the inner edge of garments that need to stay in place without straps, clasps, or adhesive. In lingerie, you will find it most commonly along the top band of strapless bras, the upper edge of thigh-high stockings, the waistband of strapless corsets, and the leg openings of adhesive-free briefs. The silicone creates a gentle friction bond against the skin that holds the garment in position through movement, dancing, and daily activity.

Unlike adhesive tapes or body glues, silicone grip does not stick to the skin — it grips it. The distinction matters. Adhesives chemically bond to the skin surface and must be peeled off, which can cause irritation and leave residue. Silicone grip works through soft friction: the pliable silicone conforms to the microscopic texture of the skin and resists sliding. It can be repositioned, removed, and reapplied without losing effectiveness or irritating the skin.

Silicone grip strips come in several configurations. A solid strip provides maximum holding power and is used on strapless bras where the garment bears significant weight. A dotted or beaded pattern uses individual silicone dots spaced along a fabric band, offering moderate grip with better breathability. A striped pattern alternates silicone lines with fabric gaps, balancing grip and air circulation for all-day comfort in warm climates.

The effectiveness of silicone grip depends on clean, dry, lotion-free skin. Body oils, moisturisers, and sweat create a film between the silicone and skin that reduces friction. Apply your body lotion at least 30 minutes before putting on silicone-grip lingerie, and avoid moisturising the specific area where the grip sits. To maintain the grip over time, wash the silicone strip with mild soap and warm water after each wearing to remove oil buildup.

How to Wear & Style

Silicone-grip thigh-highs are the elegant alternative to full pantyhose, staying up independently without a garter belt. Pair them with a cocktail dress or saree for events where you want the stocking look without visible attachments. For strapless bras, the silicone grip band should sit about one finger-width below the armpit line. If the bra slips during vigorous movement, the band may be too loose — go down a band size rather than tightening straps that do not exist.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is silicone grip?

Can silicone grip cause skin irritation?

Medical-grade silicone is hypoallergenic and generally safe for sensitive skin. However, the grip works by creating friction against skin, which can cause redness after prolonged wear in hot weather when sweat accumulates underneath. If you experience irritation, look for silicone grip bands that have a dotted or striped pattern rather than a solid strip, as the gaps allow some airflow and reduce skin contact area.

How do you restore silicone grip that has lost its stickiness?

Silicone grip loses traction when it collects body oils, lotion residue, and lint. Wash the grip strip gently with mild soap and warm water, then let it air dry completely before wearing. This removes the oily film and restores the grip. Avoid moisturising the areas where the grip sits (upper thighs for thigh-highs, ribcage for strapless bras) right before wearing.
