Jacquard

Pronunciation: juh-KARD

A fabric with an intricate pattern woven directly into the material using a special loom, creating raised or textured designs.

What Is Jacquard?

Jacquard refers to any fabric where the pattern is woven directly into the material rather than printed on top. Named after Joseph Marie Jacquard, who invented the programmable loom in 1804, this weaving technique uses individually controlled warp threads to create complex motifs — florals, geometric patterns, damask scrolls, or even figurative scenes — that become part of the fabric's structure.

In lingerie, jacquard adds a layer of visual richness without sacrificing comfort. Because the pattern is structural, it creates subtle texture against the skin — a gentle raised surface that feels more interesting than flat fabric. The weave also tends to produce a slightly thicker material than plain weaves, which gives garments a bit more body and shape retention while still remaining flexible.

When evaluating jacquard quality, turn the fabric over. A true jacquard shows the pattern in reverse on the back side (the negative of the front). The threads should be tightly woven with no loose floats or snagging. Higher thread counts generally produce finer, more detailed patterns. Cheap imitations use heat transfers or prints — these sit flat on the surface and lack the dimensional quality of genuine woven jacquard.

Sinderella uses jacquard weaves in pieces where texture and visual depth matter — the woven-in patterns hold up through washes far better than surface prints, making them a smart investment for lingerie that needs to look polished wear after wear.

How to Wear & Style

Jacquard's raised texture can show through thin outer layers, so pair it with medium-weight clothing or use it intentionally as a visible layer under sheer tops. For a gift, jacquard bra sets photograph beautifully because the woven pattern catches light at different angles. Wash jacquard lingerie inside out on a gentle cycle or hand wash — the dimensional weave traps less lint than knits but benefits from air drying to maintain the pattern's crispness.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is jacquard?

A fabric with an intricate pattern woven directly into the material using a special loom, creating raised or textured designs.

How does jacquard differ from printed fabric in lingerie?

Unlike printed fabric where designs sit on the surface and can fade over time, jacquard patterns are woven into the fabric structure itself. This means the design is reversible, more durable, and creates a tactile texture you can feel with your fingertips.

Is jacquard lingerie suitable for everyday wear?

Jacquard lingerie works for both everyday and special occasions depending on the weight and pattern. Lighter jacquard weaves with subtle patterns sit smoothly under clothing, while heavier brocade-style jacquards with bold motifs are better suited for pieces meant to be seen.
