Crisscross

An overlapping X-pattern of straps or fabric, used on bra fronts, backs, and bodysuits for decorative and structural interest.

What Is Crisscross?

Crisscross in lingerie describes any arrangement of straps, elastic bands, or fabric panels that overlap in an X-shaped pattern. The crossing can appear on the front (between or below the cups), on the back (between the shoulder blades), or wrapping around the torso of a bodysuit. The pattern may be a single X or a series of repeated crossings creating a lattice effect. Crisscross detailing is related to cage-back and cross-back designs but refers more broadly to any X-pattern on any part of the garment.

Crisscross strapping adds visual complexity and an edgy, architectural quality to lingerie. A single X across the front of a bralette draws the eye to the centre of the chest, while crisscross back straps create a geometric pattern against bare skin. The overlapping also provides a small structural benefit: crossed straps distribute pull across two diagonal vectors instead of one vertical line, which can reduce shoulder slippage on narrow or sloped shoulders.

When shopping, check the crossing point -- it should be cleanly stitched or secured with a metal ring, not just layered loosely. Loose crossings shift out of alignment quickly and look messy rather than intentional. The straps should be wide enough to sit comfortably where they cross (two thin straps overlapping at one point can create a concentrated pressure spot). Look for smooth, finished strap edges at the intersection.

Sinderella features crisscross detailing on bra sets and bodysuits, using reinforced crossing points and soft elastic for a design that stays sharp all day.

How to Wear & Style

Crisscross back straps are designed to be visible -- wear them with scoop-back tops, open-back dresses, or sheer panels. A crisscross front bralette makes a bold statement under a deep V-neck or unbuttoned shirt. For a layered look, pair a black crisscross bodysuit with high-waisted jeans and a loose-fitting blazer. As intimate wear, the X-pattern catches light and creates shadow lines against the skin, adding visual drama without needing extra lace or embellishment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is crisscross in lingerie?

An overlapping X-pattern of straps or fabric, used on bra fronts, backs, and bodysuits for decorative and structural interest.

Does a crisscross front provide more support than a standard bra?

A crisscross front pulls the cups slightly inward, creating a mild push-together effect similar to center pull construction. However, the primary benefit is visual -- the X-pattern frames the cleavage area and draws the eye to the centre of the chest. For actual support, the band and underwire matter far more than the strap arrangement.

Can crisscross straps be worn visibly as a style choice?

Absolutely. Crisscross back straps look intentional peeking out from a low-back top, off-shoulder blouse, or mesh panel. They work as a decorative detail the same way a visible bralette strap does. Choose a clean colour (black or matching your skin tone) for a polished look, or a contrasting colour for bold impact.
