Corded Lace

Lace with a raised cord outline around the motifs, creating a dimensional, textured look with defined pattern edges.

What Is Corded Lace?

Corded lace is a type of lace where a heavier thread or thin cord is laid along the outline of each motif (flower, leaf, scroll) and secured with stitching. This outlining cord -- also called a cordonnet -- creates a raised, three-dimensional border around the design elements that you can clearly see and feel. The effect is similar to tracing a drawing with a thick pen: the pattern pops off the surface of the mesh ground instead of blending into it.

In lingerie, corded lace is valued for the depth and definition it adds. A bra cup in corded lace looks richer and more detailed than the same pattern in flat lace because the raised outlines catch light and cast tiny shadows. This makes corded lace a preferred choice for premium bra sets, bodysuits, and bridal lingerie where close-up detail matters. The dimensional texture also photographs exceptionally well, which is why it appears frequently in lingerie marketing.

When assessing quality, check that the cord follows the motif edges smoothly without bunching, twisting, or gaps. The cord should be uniform in thickness throughout. On the reverse side, the cord stitching should be neat -- sloppy back stitching indicates the cord was applied hastily and may loosen after washing. Higher-end corded lace uses a gimp thread (a wrapped core thread) that maintains its round shape even after compression.

Sinderella uses corded lace on premium bra sets and bodysuits where the raised texture creates a luxurious, three-dimensional effect against the skin.

How to Wear & Style

Corded lace is best showcased in pieces worn close to the body or as standalone lingerie -- the raised texture gets lost under thick clothing. Under a sheer blouse, a corded-lace bralette creates a stunning layered effect with visible depth. For gifting, corded lace signals premium quality immediately upon touch. Avoid wearing corded lace under very tight stretch fabrics where the raised cord pattern will telegraph through as bumps. Save it for occasions where it can be seen and appreciated.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is corded lace?

Lace with a raised cord outline around the motifs, creating a dimensional, textured look with defined pattern edges.

How is corded lace different from regular lace?

In regular lace, the motif edges blend smoothly into the mesh ground. In corded lace, a heavier thread or actual cord is laid along the outline of each motif and stitched in place, creating a raised border you can feel with your fingertip. This gives corded lace a bolder, more sculptural appearance and makes the pattern visible from a greater distance.

Is corded lace itchy against the skin?

The raised cord can feel slightly textured, but it should not be scratchy on well-made pieces. Quality corded lace uses a soft, rounded cord rather than a stiff, flat one. In lingerie, the cord side often faces outward so the smoother mesh side sits against the skin. If both sides feel rough, the quality is likely poor.
