Bamboo Viscose
Bamboo Viscose
A soft, absorbent fabric made by processing bamboo pulp through viscose production methods.
What Is Bamboo Viscose?
Bamboo viscose is a regenerated cellulose fabric produced by dissolving bamboo pulp in a chemical solvent (typically sodium hydroxide), extruding the solution through spinnerets to form fibres, and then weaving or knitting those fibres into fabric. The process is identical to standard viscose (rayon) production, except it uses bamboo as the cellulose source instead of wood or cotton. The resulting fabric is exceptionally soft, highly absorbent, and has a subtle lustre similar to silk.
In lingerie, bamboo viscose occupies a middle ground between natural comfort and performance functionality. It absorbs up to three times more moisture than cotton by weight, making it outstanding for everyday underwear in warm climates. The fibres have a round, smooth cross-section (unlike cotton's twisted, ribbon-like fibres), which gives bamboo viscose its signature silky feel against the skin and reduces irritation for those with sensitive skin.
The quality difference between bamboo viscose products comes down to fibre length and processing control. Longer fibres produce a smoother, more durable fabric that resists pilling. Shorter, cheaper fibres result in a fabric that feels soft initially but degrades quickly. Check for consistent fabric weight (130-180 GSM for lingerie), uniform dye absorption, and a care label that specifies bamboo viscose or bamboo rayon rather than the vague term "bamboo."
Sinderella uses bamboo viscose blends in everyday comfort pieces, where the fabric's moisture management and softness create a noticeably more comfortable wearing experience than standard synthetics, especially during long Indian summers.
How to Wear & Style
Bamboo viscose underwear and lounge sets are the everyday foundation of a comfort-focused lingerie drawer. They excel under office wear, during workouts (for low to moderate intensity), and as sleepwear in hot weather. Machine wash on a gentle cycle with cool water; bamboo viscose shrinks more than synthetic fabrics when exposed to heat, so always air dry. When gifting, bamboo viscose basics are a practical luxury — the recipient notices the softness difference immediately.

How does bamboo viscose differ from regular bamboo fabric?
Bamboo viscose and bamboo fabric are often the same thing — most commercial bamboo textile is produced using the viscose process, which chemically dissolves bamboo pulp to extract cellulose. The term bamboo viscose is more technically accurate because it specifies the production method. Mechanically processed bamboo (bamboo linen) is rare and much coarser. When a lingerie label says bamboo, it almost always means bamboo viscose.
Is bamboo viscose an eco-friendly fabric choice?
Bamboo as a plant is highly sustainable — it grows fast without pesticides and requires minimal water. However, the viscose process uses chemical solvents like sodium hydroxide and carbon disulphide, which must be responsibly managed. Closed-loop production (where solvents are captured and recycled) significantly reduces the environmental footprint. Look for certifications like OEKO-TEX or FSC to verify responsible manufacturing.
